The Playhouse was built in 1924 and once demolished by a hurricane but the Great Depression is what hit hardest, especially for the Oakley brothers who built it.
“They were losing the theater and depressed, he ate lunch with his family and then proceeded to go upstairs and shot himself and a year to the day later his brother dropped dead of a heart attack,” said Dixon-Mears, “They say that the brothers are here and haunting us but I think we have more than one spirit around.”
Just about everyone who’s worked there has a story.
“One woman was up in the costume shop who had just hung all the costumes, walked out of the room, came back. All of the costumes were off the hangers and on the floor. So it was somebody playing a trick,” she said.
